Governance

Strategic oversight and vision

Presbyterian Ladies' College (PLC), Melbourne, has a long and proud history of leadership in girls' education. Founded in 1875 and incorporated in 1980, PLC is a not-for-profit public company limited by guarantee, operating under its Constitution in connection with the Presbyterian Church of Victoria as a charity with educational purposes. Our governance framework ensures that the College upholds its mission with integrity, transparency, and accountability.

Through well-defined strategies, policies, and risk assessments, PLC’s governance approach not only meets regulatory and governmental requirements but also proactively adapts to the evolving educational landscape. This ensures a sustainable and prosperous future for our students while honoring our deep-rooted Christian values and connection to the Presbyterian Church of Victoria.

Role and structure of the PLC Council

The PLC Council serves as the cornerstone of our governance structure, bearing the ultimate responsibility for the College's strategic direction and financial stewardship. Entrusted with appointing the Principal, the Council collaborates closely with them to ensure the delivery of the strategy. Together, they work to develop and implement initiatives, policies, and processes that fulfill the objectives outlined in our Constitution, ensuring compliance with all regulatory and governmental mandates.

According to the Constitution, PLC Council has seventeen voluntary members appointed in the following
manner:

  • Group A: five members are appointed by the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Victoria
  • Group B: five members are nominated by the Group B Selection Committee whose members represent the Old Collegians' Association and the Parents' Association. The nominees are then automatically appointed by the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Victoria
  • Group C: seven members are nominated by the College Council, and approved and appointed by the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Victoria
