Professor Ros Gleadow (Hare 1972), a renowned plant scientist, has been elected as a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science. ‘It is indeed a great honour,’ she said, reflecting on a career that has seen her make major contributions to understanding how plants adapt to environmental changes.

This prestigious recognition highlights not only her groundbreaking research, but also her leadership in the global plant science community and her dedication to addressing pressing challenges in agriculture and food security.

Looking back, Professor Gleadow recalls her early passion for science: ‘I was reflecting today on how I had my Year 8 English talk on reproduction in paramecium, which we’d just learnt about in science – complete with illustrating the process on the blackboard!’ That enthusiasm was nurtured during her time at PLC. ‘I appreciate enormously the wonderful education I had at PLC, which has always been strong in the sciences.’

Her election to the Academy places her among a select group of scientists who have made exceptional advancements in their fields and demonstrated remarkable leadership. It is also a celebration of the long-lasting impact of early inspiration and support. She added, ‘on a personal note, I am still friends with my circle – several of whom also went on to study science.’

Professor Gleadow's career stands as a testament to the value of scientific curiosity, strong mentorship, and the lifelong influence of a passionate educational community.
