PLC is a leading independent day and boarding school for girls, located in Melbourne, Australia. We welcome enrolment applications from international students.
International students benefit from PLC’s outstanding teaching, exceptional academic programs, world-class facilities and inclusive culture.
As a boarding school, international students at PLC can live on campus in our welcoming and well-equipped Boarding House.
International students who are accompanied by a parent on a guardian visa may reside with that parent.
International enrolment application step-by-step guide
Here are the steps you will need to follow to apply to enrol your daughter as an international student at PLC.
Step 1: Collect your documentation
You will need to provide some or all of the following documents with your daughter’s enrolment application, so it’s a good idea to have them ready:
- Birth certificate
- Passport scan (including biodata page) or Australian citizenship certificate (if applicable)
- Visa copy (if applicable)
- Most recent school report if applying for Year 5 or above
- Most recent NAPLAN report (if applicable)
- Educational or psychologist reports (if applicable)
- AEAS or IDAT report (for overseas applicants; if applicable)
Step 2: Registration and assessment
Students who have been studying in a school outside Australia are required to undertake an interview and assessment with either AEAS or IDAT. These assessments assist PLC to determine whether students require intensive English (ELICOS) prior to commencement. If ELICOS is required, this will be detailed in the offer of enrolment letter and a list of recommended English language centres will be provided. Assessments are valid for up to 12 months.
For IDAT entry requirements, students must be classroom ready at all levels. AEAS scores are outlined below.
- Entry into Year 7 or 8: AEAS 70 or above
- Entry into Year 9 or 10: AEAS 75 or above
- Entry into Year 11: AEAS 80 or above
If the commencement score is not achieved, ELICOS is likely to be recommended and, in some cases, a retest will be required before enrolment can be confirmed. A full review, including school reports and an interview, may be taken into consideration when assessing the enrolment application, along with the outcome of the AEAS or IDAT test.
Step 3: Complete the online application form
You will be asked to provide the following information on the application form:
- Student details
- Year of entry
- Family arrangements
- Parent details
- Contact details
- Previous school(s) details
- Learning/medical needs
- Connections to PLC (if any)
Step 4: Upload your documents
Upload your documents as required.
Step 5: Parent signatures
Parents are required to sign the enrolment application.
Step 6: Pay the application fee
An application fee of A$150.00 is payable. This is non-refundable.
Step 7: Application confirmation
You will receive a confirmation email upon successful completion of the online application. At this stage, your daughter will be placed on a waiting list.
Step 8: Offer
A formal letter of offer will be sent via email if a place is available for your daughter for the specified intake year. PLC commences offering places for international students according to the timings below:
- Year 5 and Year 7 – two to three years prior to the planned commencement year.
- Years 9 to 11 – 18 months prior to the planned commencement year.
Offers are made at non-intake years as places become available. Please note that if you submit an application for a non-intake year, your daughter will automatically be added to the waiting list and the Admissions Team will contact you directly should a place become available.
Step 9: Acceptance and confirmation of enrolment
Complete the Acceptance of Place Offer by the due date outlined in the letter of offer and pay a non-refundable enrolment fee of A$1,500.
Step 10: Holding deposit
A holding deposit is charged one year prior to commencement to confirm enrolment for Year 5 and Year 7. The holding deposit is credited back to school fees in Term 2 of the year a student commences.
Step 11: Student transition meeting
In the year prior to enrolment, students entering the Junior School will be invited with their families to a meeting with a member of our Junior School Leadership Team. Students in Years 7 to 11 will be invited to an online meeting. The aim of these meetings is to understand your daughter’s interests, talents and needs to support her successful transition to PLC.
International enrolment FAQs
When is the deadline for enrolment applications?
There are no deadlines for applying to enrol at PLC, but we recommend submitting an application as soon as possible. Places at PLC are in demand, with applications often exceeding the number of available places.
Is there any difference between the AEAS and IDAT assessment services?
Both AEAS and IDAT assessments are accepted at PLC.
AEAS assessments must be completed at a recognised AEAS testing centre. There are AEAS testing centres in Australia and many overseas countries. Results are typically provided within two weeks.
IDAT assessments can be completed from home under controlled conditions. Results are provided within two days.
Are all prospective international students required to undertake an assessment with AEAS or IDAT?
Yes. These assessments help us determine whether students require intensive English (ELICOS) prior to commencement.
How do I organise an AEAS or IDAT assessment?
If my daughter doesn’t score highly enough on the AEAS or IDAT assessment, can I still enrol her?
Yes, you should still apply to enrol her at PLC. We review the AEAS or IDAT assessment in conjunction with the other material you supply. If ELICOS is required, this will be detailed in the offer of enrolment letter and a list of recommended English language centres will be provided.
What is ELICOS?
ELICOS (English Language Intensive Course for Overseas Students) is designed to teach the English language skills required for an Australian school.
When a student has been taught in a non-English speaking school, it is likely they will require ELICOS prior to commencement at PLC.
Which English language centres do you recommend?
For students also requiring boarding, we recommend:
Otherwise, we suggest:
Can my daughter apply for Year 12 entry?
Adjustment to a new school, a new country and a new way of life, as well as making new friends, takes considerable time and effort.
Our last entry point is at the beginning of Year 11, but we prefer that students join by Year 10 to give them time to consolidate and strengthen study skills in the Australian system before commencing the two-year VCE or IB course.
Subject choices for Year 11 are made by mid-Year 10 level and students already in the school have the advantage of having developed a good understanding of the subjects available to them. Some Year 10 students choose to study a Year 11 subject, making their workload in Year 11 or 12 slightly lighter.
Do I need to arrange OSHC for my daughter?
Yes. All international students must have Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the full length of their student visa.
OSHC must be valid for the entire time a student is in Australia. OSHC providers include Allianz Global Assistance, BUPA Australia, NIB, Medibank Private and Australian Health Management. A copy of the Policy Certificate is required before a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) is issued.
Overseas or local students need to arrange their own medical insurance cover with Medicare. Private health insurance (to cover hospital and any other expenses which Medicare does not cover) should also be considered.
Can my daughter live with a family friend while she is studying at PLC?
No. All students must either live with a close direct adult relative (in Melbourne) or in the PLC Boarding House. The close direct adult relative must speak English, be at least 21 years of age and remain in Melbourne while the student is at PLC.
What is it like for international students in the PLC Boarding House?
PLC’s Boarding House (known as Koorinya) offers a warm, welcoming ‘home away from home’ for international students from all over the world. A caring team of staff ensures every girl is supported to make friends, have fun and thrive as part of an inclusive residential community. Find out more on our Boarding page.
Can my daughter leave the Boarding House early to catch a flight home?
No. All students must remain until the end of term. Holidays or flights home must be arranged well in advance to make sure that the student will not miss any classes. Depending on flight times, this may mean flying home the day after school finishes.
What is the ESOS Legislative Framework?
This is the legislation that governs international students’ enrolment in Australia. For more information about ESOS please visit the ESOS legislative framework website.
When are school fees due?
International student fees are due each October for the following year, except for the first year, when an invoice for tuition fees will be issued on enrolment.
On receipt of fees and Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) proof, a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) will be issued. A Confirmation of Appropriate Accommodation and Welfare letter (CAAW) will also be issued with the CoE for all boarding students.
