Learn to Swim & Water safety
At PLC Aquatic, we offer a complete aquatic pathway for swimmers of all ages and abilities, from beginners taking their first steps in the water through to those refining their skills and technique. Our Learn to Swim program focuses on water safety, confidence and stroke development, supported by personalised instruction and ongoing teacher-led assessments. With year-round classes, experienced instructors and state of the art facilities, swimmers are equipped with the skills and confidence to thrive in and around the water and be ready for the next stage of their swimming journey.
Learn to swim levels
Level 1 – White
For children new to swimming, this level focuses on building water confidence. Swimmers learn to put their face in the water, float, kick, and become comfortable moving in shallow water.
Level 2 – Red
Swimmers can float independently on their front and back, kick on front and back (with or without aids).
Swimmers can torpedo at least 5 m without aids, swim 5 m freestyle without breathing and aids, backstroke 5 m with aid, and start learning the breaststroke kick.
Level 3 – Orange
Swimmers complete 7 m freestyle with side breathing and 7 m backstroke without aid. They develop breaststroke legs (on front and back) and gain confidence swimming in deeper water (up to 1.8 m).
Level 4 – Purple
Swimmers can swim approximately 10 m freestyle with bilateral breathing, 10m backstroke, practice breaststroke arms, legs, and timing, perform 10 m dolphin kick, and swim independently in deep water.
Level 5 – Pink
Swimmers can swim 25 m freestyle and backstroke, 15 m breaststroke with correct kick, develop 25m butterfly kicks with fins, somersaults, and perform a lifesaving backstroke for 25 m.
Level 6 – Royal Blue
Swimmers can swim 50 m freestyle and backstroke with correct starts, turns, and finishes, 25 m breaststroke with proper start and turn, and 10 m butterfly with fins.
Level 7 – Light Blue
Swimmers can swim 75 m freestyle and backstroke (with starts, turns, and finishes), 50 m breaststroke, 15 m butterfly, and demonstrate correct turns for breaststroke and butterfly.
Level 8 – Green
Swimmers can swim and maintain techniques in 100m freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and Individual Medley, with proper start and turns, and a certain level of water safety skills (e.g. timed tow, 400m survival swim).
Learn to Swim programs
Learn to Swim
For swimmers aged 3 years and above. Our technique and water safety focused program develops confidence and competency across all four competitive strokes. Classes run for 40 minutes and are available on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons, as well as Saturday mornings.
Adult Learn to Swim
Designed for adults aged 18 years and over who are looking to build confidence, improve technique or learn to swim for the first time. Small group classes are available at lunchtime on Mondays and Wednesdays.
Emerald Squad
A dedicated transition program focused on introducing swimmers to competition skills, including starts, turns and finishes. Sessions are held on Tuesday afternoons.
Holiday Programs
Four-day intensive programs designed to accelerate skill development and build confidence during the school holidays.
Private Lessons
One-on-one instruction tailored to individual goals and skill levels. Available upon request.

Learn to Swim FAQs
Can I make up a session if I miss it?
Yes. One make up lesson per term is available for each student. A credit will be applied for missed sessions supported by a medical certificate. Make up lessons cannot be transferred between terms and can be booked via the Parent Portal or by contacting the office.
Do you offer trial lessons?
No, we do not offer trial lessons for Learn to Swim classes. Please refer to our level descriptions when enrolling or contact our Learn to Swim Coordinators for assistance with level selection.
Is parking available?
Limited underground parking is available at the Joan Montgomery Centre (JMC). Additional parking is available via Gate 6 on Parer Street and Gate 1 on Burwood Highway after 4.15pm, all within a five minute walk of the JMC.
What is the re enrolment process?
Our Learn to Swim program operates on a term by term basis. Classes automatically roll over at the end of each term, and payment must be made by the rollover cut off date to secure your place. Changes to bookings can be requested.
Can I start mid term?
Yes. Students can join at any time during the term, with fees charged on a pro rata basis from the commencement date.
What should I bring to my lesson?
Please bring bathers, a towel and goggles. Swim caps must be worn by all students participating in the Learn to Swim program. Kickboards, fins, pull buoys, noodles and other Learn to Swim equipment are provided for use during lessons.
Do you operate on public holidays?
No. The Learn to Swim program does not operate on public holidays.
How are students assessed?
Every lesson is an assessment opportunity. Students are continually assessed by their teacher during class. Each level includes ten criteria that must be achieved before progressing to the next level. Once all criteria have been met, students move up immediately with no need to wait for a designated assessment day.
Can I swim outside of my class time?
No. Students may only enter the water during their scheduled lesson time.
