Chaplain's Corner

It’s always good to be able to do something nice for others, especially as Christmas approaches. Recently a couple of requests have come my way that I thought would be good to pass on to the wider PLC school community for consideration.

The first came from Rev John Wilson (who deserves much of the credit for connecting PLC to Neno Girls’ School in Malawi) in the form of the 2010 CONTAINER APPEAL. Over the last few years, several containers of goods have been sent from the Presbyterian Church of Victoria to support the work of the church in Central Africa. These containers have been very well received and a variety of institutions have greatly benefited from them. This container will support the work of the Theological College, Presbyterian Schools including Neno Girls’ School in Malawi, Orbus Christian Orphanage, Chigodi Women’s Centre and Mulanje Mission Hospital. The list of items needed is very specific. Please contact me on cgreen@plc.vic.edu.au if you would like a copy of this list. The items will be collected in the period February 11-18, 2010 and then sent on to Africa soon after that. Items will need to be suitably packed and labelled. Rev Wilson is still looking for some warehouse space (ideally in the northern suburbs of Melbourne) to collect and store the items. So if there is any kind person out there who is able to help with warehouse space at this time, I am sure that he would love to hear from you at wilsonjp@aanet.com.au
The second request came from an old WWII digger, ‘Shorty’ Corbett who is President of the 2/6 Cavalry Commando Association. PLC has a formal association with the 2/6 CCA, which was organised through the Shrine. A few years ago some of our Year 9 girls were able to attend a short ceremony, which celebrated the formation of this Regiment on November 3, 1939. On the year that our girls attended this ceremony, November 3 fell on a Friday. Unfortunately on every other year since then, November 3 has fallen on the Melbourne Cup long weekend and it has not been possible to organise a group of girls from the school, although I have continued to attend the service each year.
The direct descendent (in military terms) of the 2/6 Cavalry Commando Regiment is the 2 Cavalry Regiment based in Darwin. Currently this regiment has 83 soldiers deployed on operations overseas. This regiment has invited members of the 2/6 CCA (and they have extended this invitation to members of the PLC community) to send some inspirational letters, cards, Christmas cake, lollies etc to these soldiers. Obviously personal names and locations of these soldiers can’t be revealed, but the idea is a very nice one so I pass it on to you for consideration. There is a long and honourable tradition of the Australian public sending gifts and letters to soldiers serving on operations overseas and even a brief reading of Australian war diaries, biographies and histories shows how much these things have been appreciated by soldiers serving overseas. Some of the old diggers in the 2/6 CCA still remember how their spirits were lifted and their outlook on life affected in positive ways by the thoughtful letters and generous gifts that occasionally came their way.

If you would like to support this request please send your package to:

Although we may have some occasional complications in our lives, most of us generally enjoy a relatively safe and prosperous life for which we should be very thankful to God. The Bible is full of encouragements to remember the poor and those who are in danger (see Matthew 25:31-46 for example). With this in mind I commend both of these request for your consideration and support.
